Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella

Yaz Side Effects

Manufactured by Bayer, Yaz and Yasmin, as well as generic equivalent Ocella, are among the most popular and recognizable brands of oral contraceptives in the U.S. In fact, Yaz, the low-estrogen version of Yasmin, is the top-selling birth control pill in the country. Together, Yaz and Yasmin are Bayer’s top-selling pharmaceutical line.

Many believe Yaz and Yasmin’s popularity stems from its large-scale advertising campaign that promises its users reduced premenstrual dysphoric syndrome (PMDD) symptoms, acne and bloating in addition to pregnancy prevention. However, Yaz’s effectiveness at fighting acne and PMDD has not been medically proven, despite television and print advertisements that state otherwise.

Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella contain drospirenone, a synthetic progestin that has been linked to a number of harmful Yaz side effects. Drospirenone can cause hyperkalemia (high potassium), which, particularly in users with can lead to conditions such as:

Using drospirenone can also lead to gallbladder side effects. Drospirenone increases levels of cholesterol in bile, the substance that helps the body remove waste. Bile is stored in the gallbladder. Fatty bile increases the risk of conditions such as gallbladder stones and pancreatitis. Many have experienced problems with their gallbladder since taking Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella and have had gallbladder removal surgery, a very serious procedure.

Bayer has come under fire for its misleading advertising campaign for its oral contraceptives. At present, the FDA has issued four warnings to Bayer for ads that overstate the benefits and understate the major health risks associated with the drugs.
